Johnson Joseph

AMC maritime engineering graduate Johnson Joseph is on track to carving out a rewarding career in the naval shipbuilding sector.

Mr Joseph was among 3,360 students to have their degrees conferred as part of the University of Tasmania’s winter round of graduations.

After completing a mechanical engineering degree in his home country of India, he decided to specialise in ship design and moved to Tasmania two years ago to undertake a Master of Engineering (Maritime Design).

He chose to continue his academic studies at the Australian Maritime College due to its strong international reputation and access to hands-on hydrodynamic testing facilities.

“AMC has great value in the Australian maritime industry,” Mr Joseph said.

“As an AMC student, I received great acceptance in the industry while I searched for internships and jobs. I felt extremely privileged to do the summer internship with a company like Navantia Australia.”

During his internship at Navantia’s design office in Melbourne, Mr Joseph worked on the sustainment programs for the Australian Landing Helicopter Dock (ALHD) vessels and LHD Landing Craft (LLC).

“I was involved in the project management, design, engineering and drafting duties associated with these projects. The summer vacation program at Navantia Australia was a golden steppingstone in my professional career in the maritime industry,” he said.

As part of his degree, Mr Joseph also completed a research thesis on conceptual shipyard layout design based on study conducted in Cochin Shipyard Ltd in India.

He is now in the process of applying for work visas and looking for a graduate position to kickstart his maritime career.
