Prospective students, their families and the wider community gained insight into the range of study options on offer at the Australian Maritime College when we threw open our doors as part of the University of Tasmania’s Open Day in Launceston on Saturday, 12 August.
The action-packed day featured course information sessions, hands-on activities, demonstrations, displays, good food and live entertainment.
We held a competition for interstate prospective students to win a trip to Tasmania for the event, with 13 lucky winners from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria receiving the chance to experience what AMC student life is all about.
The group had invaluable one-on-one time with staff members and current students to chat about the courses on offer, as well as touring the campus accommodation, taking the helm of our sailing simulator, and experiencing a shipwreck survival exercise in the Survival Centre pool.
They also caught a glimpse of the types of rewarding maritime careers that an AMC degree can lead to, with three recent graduates across seafaring, maritime engineering and maritime business and international logistics chatting about their current careers.
“AMC is the best place for challenging students and can open many career pathways… this competition was a very good way to make students aware about interstate study options,” Symrin Oad, from Victoria, said.
Lucas Waters, from Victoria added: “I found out lots of information about my course specifically that you cannot read about on the Internet or brochures. It was ideal length for a student in year 12, not to miss too much school, but still long enough for a fun and informative weekend. Big thanks to Carley and the whole team for their professionalism and fun spirit!”
